Welcome to Pontianak - Intoduction

Pontianak is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Borneo. It is a medium-size trading port city on the island of Borneo. Pontianak occupies an area of 107.82 kmĀ² in the delta of the Kapuas River. It is located almost precisely on the equator, hence it is widely known as Kota Khatulistiwa (Equator City). The city center is actually less than 3 kilometres (2 mi) south. Pontianak City was built by Syafrif Abdurrahkan Alkadrie in 1771 who established the Pontianak Sultanate here. Pontianak city is mostly populated by ethnic Chinese, Dayak, and Malay.
In Pontianak, there is a Kapuas River which is the country's longest and largest river, and one of the longest rivers in the world. The Kapuas River has its source at Gunung Lawit, deep in the Mueller mountain in Central Borneo where it rushes down. Besides that Kapuas River is also a major waterway to reach interior towns such as Sintang and Putussibau.
